A new addition to ADP LumiFlow is the Colour FX for Photoshop Plugin brings some exciting new features in the Filters and the brand new Painting With Colour.
In the top section of the panel you will find the exciting new filters and some familiar ones as well.
This brand new section allows you to paint colour on your image through Solid Color Adjustment layers or Transparent layers. You can then apply Luminosity Masks to your layers to control the tonal range effected.
Included in this section are your viewing options, invert mask, and brushing & painting tools.
We poured many hours into the development of some new and exciting Colour FX for Photoshop filters. All of these filters can bring some amazing results to your images, but they should be used in moderation, like any adjustment.
Applying the filters then masking in the effect in the areas you want and add the opacity you require is the best approach. Rarely will any filter at 100% strength create a desired effect in your image.
Previous version of ADP LumiFlow Plugins have had the Soft Glow filter, we have now added Dark, Warm and Cool glows to the Colour FX for Photoshop panel. Each of these filters will do exactly as described by applying a slight soft glow to the image and:
The Orton Glow is an effect in photography coined by Michael Orton, and is an in camera technique. The Orton Glow in post processing is a technique used to emulate, the in camera effect.
The detail extractors are a powerful tool that use Surface Blur and colour separation to not only create enhanced detail, but tonal separation. This tool can be easy to over use and applied globally to images. Rather, the tool should be used to enhance texture in details of images, and to increase colour separation in similar colour tones. When applied, the filters are set to 50% opacity. Best practice would be to choose the one/s that effect the areas you want and then place them in a a group with black mask. By doing this you can then paint in the desired effect. We also recommend that you view your image at 100% to truly see the detail being added.
Adding structure to your image works in a similar way to the Detail Extractors, but it’s much broader in it’s application. It will enhance contrast in the image without overly brightening or darkening the image. It will be applied with a black mask, then you paint in the effect where desired. You can disable the mask to see the full effect at 100%.
Removing structure in you image softens the image by removing contrast. It’s not actually softening the image, but through the removal of contrast, transitions in tones become much smoother. It will be applied with a black mask, then you paint in the effect where desired. You can disable the mask to see the full effect at 100%.
The Dynamic Contrast will create powerful contrast adjustments through all of the tonal ranges in your image. It will protect the highlights and shadows in its adjustment. The effect of this filter is very strong when applied at 100%. The filter is applied initially at 100% with no mask applied. Adjust the opacity of the layer to a desired effect, then apply a black mask to the layer to paint the effect into your image.
Using all methods will create separate layers in the new document with all three methods of sharpening in Photoshop. Here you can view all of the different methods to determine which one is best for your image. As you are looking at each type, turn off the other two so they are not affecting each other.
The De-Haze filter is designed to cut through the areas of your image that appear washed out or have very little contrast. This is also a filter with a very strong effect if applied at 100%. A layer is created at 100% with a black mask. Use a white brush to reveal the effect in the desired areas. You can also combine this with luminosity masks to control the tones effected.
Using this function, you enter the size you want your image to be on its long edge. When you press the Execute button it will sharpen in a new document with the method you chose, or all methods.
Painting with colour in Colour FX is something used by many professional photographers and retouchers to inject or modify colours in their images. We have provided you with some of the tools in this section of the panel typically used for introducing colour.
When using this section of the panel, you want to first choose the colour you want to work with. We have provided 45 preset colours, 15 warm, 15 cool, and 15 earth tones. If you want to use one of these colours you simply press on the desired colour before using the other tools. If you want to pick a colour directly from your image, or choose your own colour, use the Color Pick tool to the right of the preset colours.
Using the Solid Color method of adding colour to your image will create a Solid Color adjustment layer based on the colour you chose. This will be applied to your entire image, with the blending mode of the layer set to color. You then have two methods to choose the areas effected, with by painting on a layer mask or applying a luminosity mask using the Luminosity Apply – Adjust – Replace tool. With the latter, you can work in Image or Mask view, or switch between both until you get the colour addition just right.
The transparent method of painting with colour creates a transparent pixel layer, with its blending mode set to colour. You can start to paint your colour directly on the transparent layer or you can use a luminosity mask to control the area effected. Using the Luminosity Apply – Adjust – Replace tool you can work between Image and Mask view to select the perfect mask. This mask can also be adjusted at any time by re-entering the tool.
Some basic tools have been provided in this section of the panel.
Brushes: A white and black brush to paint on the adjustment layer masks.
Fill: Fill an adjustment layer mask with white or black.
Invert: Invert the white and black in a layer mask.
Viewing: Zoom in or out, full screen or to 100%.
Step Back and Forward: Undo or Redo any adjustments that you make.
